Turmeric
There’s a certain warmth that only turmeric knows how to bring not just to food but to life
That deep, sunlit yellow that stains everything it touches as if determined to leave behind a trace of light
I remember one monsoon evening when the sky was heavy and my body even heavier, I had caught a cold — the kind that fogs the mind and dampens the mood
My mother appeared quietly with a steaming glass of haldi doodh.
“Drink this,” she said, her voice calm and certain
I wrinkled my nose at the sight of the golden milk, but I obeyed
One sip — earthy, warm, gently spiced and I felt the comfort of home itself
That night wrapped in a blanket, I watched the rain fall outside and thought about how something so simple could feel so sacred
Turmeric, I realized was more than a spice
It was sunlight in powdered form — condensed warmth and waiting to heal
In every Indian home, turmeric is both medicine and blessing
It purifies the food, brightens the skin, heals the wounds and sanctifies rituals
From the haldi ceremony that marks new beginnings to the pinch added to the first meal of the day, its presence speaks of protection, renewal, and light
My grandmother used to call it “haridra” — the yellow goddess who keeps illness and darkness away

Ayurveda describes turmeric as deepana and pachana — one that kindles digestion and clears impurities
But beyond its physical uses, it carries a spiritual symbolism I’ve come to love: the reminder that purity is not about being untouched by life, but about transforming what touches us
Just as turmeric turns everything golden, so also can we by letting light pass through us and not around us
Now, every time I stir a pinch of turmeric into dal or milk, I think of it as adding sunlight to the body
A simple act but also a prayer — May warmth stay. May light remain
Reflection on turmeric:
Turmeric teaches that healing begins with warmth — a light we carry within
No matter how dark the day, a little golden courage can turn pain into purpose and fatigue into faith
