Why To Stop Comparing And Start Living
Why To Stop Comparing And Start Living
Recently, I started reading The Complete Book of Yoga by Swami Vivekananda, a profound work that helps us understand the deeper connection between the mind, body and soul through four paths of yoga namely Karma Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, Raja Yoga and Jnana Yoga
As I journey through the pages of Karma Yoga section, I felt inspired to share some of the insights that touched me personally
My intention is not to explain the teachings as a scholar but to reflect on them as an ordinary person trying to understand life a little better each day
I therefore invite you to join me on this journey as we together explore the wisdom of Karma Yoga and its relevance in our modern lives
My previous blog on “Why Life Is Not Happening to You but Shaping You,” gave me a fresh perspective on how I observe everyday experiences
It encouraged me to look things beyond events and discover the lessons hidden within them
I hope this series does the same for you and me as well
Today’s reflection is also based on one of Swami Vivekananda’s powerful teachings from Karma Yoga…
“Each is great in his own place.”
In a world that constantly pushes us to compare our lives, our achievements and journeys with others, these simple words carries a timeless message
They remind us that every individual has a unique role, purpose and path to play in this life
The duty of one person is not the duty of another, and true growth begins when we stop measuring ourselves against others and start honoring our own journey in this life
Let us together explore what swami vivekananda’s teaching mean and how it can help us find greater peace, confidence and contentment in our daily lives always
In today’s world, it is easy to feel overwhelmed
We compare our lives with carefully edited social media posts. We doubt our abilities when others seem more successful
Sometimes we become so afraid of making mistakes that we stop taking action altogether
More than a century ago, Swami Vivekananda addressed these very human struggles through his teachings on Karma Yoga. His words remain surprisingly relevant even in today’s modern era
Among his many teachings, three powerful ideas stand out namely .. faith in oneself, the importance of action and the understanding that every person has a unique role to play
let us try to understand these factors one by one for all of us to understand better and absorb the things that swami vivekanand wanted us to know
1. Faith in Yourself Comes Before Faith in God
Why To Stop Comparing And Start Living
Swami Vivekananda said…
“He who has no faith in himself can never have faith in God.“
At first, this statement may sound surprising. Many people think faith begins with belief in a higher power
swami Vivekananda reminds us that self-belief is also sacred
If we constantly tell ourselves:
“I am not capable.”
“Others are better than me.”
“I can never do that.”
then we close the door to our own potential
Faith in oneself does not mean arrogance but It means in recognizing that the same divine spark exists within every human being
A homemaker managing a family, a teacher shaping young minds, a farmer cultivating the land or a student preparing for exams…. all have their own value and purpose in life
Before asking God to guide us, we must first believe that we are worthy of that guidance that the supreme offers us
2. Action Is Better Than Inactivity
Why To Stop Comparing And Start Living
Many of us wait for the perfect moment
We wait until we feel confident
We wait until conditions improve
We wait until fear disappears
Often, that perfect moment never arrives
Swami Vivekananda emphasized that inactivity should be avoided by all means.
Life itself is movement. Growth comes through action
He taught that activity naturally involves resistance. Whenever we try to improve ourselves, we encounter obstacles
We want to exercise but feel lazy
We want to learn something new but fear failure
We want to speak up but worry about criticism
Resistance is not a sign to stop as It is a part of the journey
swami Vivekananda encouraged us to resist evil both physical and mental
Today in this era of strong social media influence… mental evils may appear as:
Negative self-talk
Jealousy
Laziness
Fear
Constant comparison
By facing these challenges instead of surrendering to them, we become much stronger
Interestingly, true calmness does not come from avoiding life’s battles but It comes after we have faced them courageously
3. Each Is Great in His or Her Own Space
Why To Stop Comparing And Start Living
One of the most comforting teachings of Karma Yoga is that every person has a unique duty
Swami Vivekananda said..
“Each is great in his own place.”
Modern life constantly encourages comparison
Someone has a better job.
Someone earns more money.
Someone has more followers.
Someone appears happier
But comparison ignores an important truth: different people have different paths
The duty of a mother is not the duty of a doctor
The duty of a teacher is not the duty of an entrepreneur
The duty of a student is not the duty of a retiree
When we compare ourselves to others, we often judge our journey using someone else’s map
A rose does not compete with a lotus
A mango tree does not compare itself with a coconut tree
Each fulfills its own purpose
The same is true for human beings as well
Instead of asking, “Why am I not like them?” we can ask, “Am I fulfilling my own role to the best of my ability?”
That question leads to growth instead of frustration
Bringing Karma Yoga into Daily Life
Why To Stop Comparing And Start Living
The teachings of Karma Yoga are not limited to monks or spiritual seekers
They can be practiced every day:
Believe in your abilities
Take action even when conditions are imperfect
Resist negative thoughts and harmful habits
Stop comparing your journey with others
Focus on fulfilling your own responsibilities sincerely
Small actions performed with dedication can become a form of spiritual practice
Final Thoughts
Why To Stop Comparing And Start Living
The world may encourage comparison, self-doubt and endless distraction. Swami Vivekananda’s teachings offers a different path
Have faith in yourself
Keep moving forward through action
Remember that your role in life is unique
When we stop comparing ourselves to others and focus on performing our own duties sincerely, we discover something powerful….that we were never meant to become someone else
We were meant to become the best version of ourselves
Which of these three teachings speaks to you the most….self-faith, action or embracing your unique path?
