mythological stories associated with the seeds
Yes! Indian mythology has many fascinating stories about seeds and their significance
Here are some mythological connections for sesame, pumpkin, sunflower, and flax seeds..
1. Sesame (Til) Seeds – The Seeds of Immortality
In Hindu mythology, the sesame seeds (til) are considered sacred and are believed to have been blessed by Lord Yama, the god of death
They are commonly used in Pitr Tarpan (ancestor offerings) during Shraadh rituals in india to help departed souls to attain peace
2. Pumpkin (Kushmanda) – The Cosmic Egg of Creation
Pumpkin is connected to the goddess Kushmanda, an incarnation of Durga
The name Kushmanda comes from three Sanskrit words:
Ku = little
Ushma = warmth or energy
Anda = egg
Meaning: “The one who created the universe as a little cosmic egg.”
According to legend, when the universe was dark and void, Kushmanda Devi smiled, and her divine energy created the cosmos—just like a pumpkin growing from a tiny seed into a massive fruit
In Hindu rituals, pumpkins are used in Navratri pujas and sacrificial fire ceremonies (homas) to absorb negative energies
3. Sunflower – The Devotion of Suryabhakta
While sunflowers are not quite mentioned in Hindu mythology, there’s a story of Suryabhakta (Devotee of the Sun) which is linked to sunflowers’ symbolism
In an ancient story, a young devotee of Surya (the Sun God) wanted to be blessed with eternal knowledge
He would meditate from sunrise to sunset, always facing the sun
Pleased by his devotion, Surya blessed him, and when the devotee left his mortal form, a beautiful golden sunflower bloomed where he sat—forever turning toward the Sun as a sign of eternal devotion
4. Flax Seeds – The Sacred Thread of Sages
Flax seeds (also called Alsi in Sanskrit) have been used in Ayurveda for centuries
though they don’t have a direct mythological story, they are linked to rishis (sages) and Vedic traditions
In ancient times, flax fiber was used to weave sacred threads (Yajnopavita)which was worn by Brahmins during Upanayana (sacred thread ceremony)
It was believed that consuming flax seeds helped the rishis maintain mental clarity and a sattvic (pure) mind during meditation
Moral of These Stories?
Seeds are more than just food; they hold spiritual significance and symbolize purity, devotion, creation, and health in Hindu culture
