Simple Khichdi Recipe
From My Stove with Love – Part 1
Simple Khichdi Recipe
Intro: When Food Learns to Listen
There are days when the house feels too quiet,
and the mind too loud
Days when your to-do list glares at you,
but your body softly says, “Not today.”
On those evenings, I find myself returning to khichdi —
that humble, forgiving friend who never asks for more than you can give
It’s soft, nurturing, and full of permission
But this time, I gave my old comfort a new story —
a little crunch of surprise on top,
just to remind myself that even on tired days,
a small spark can change everything
Ingredients required for Simple Khichdi Recipe
For the khichdi:
half cup moong dal (split yellow lentils)
half cup rice
half tspn turmeric powder
Salt to taste
3 cups water
can add any vegetables if you want to make khichdi more healthy like doodhi ( bottle guard ) or pumpkin .. anything of your choice..
For the crispy masala tadka:
1 tbsp ghee
half tspn cumin seeds
1 finely sliced small onion
1 tomato, chopped
half teaspoon red chili powder
quarter teaspoon garam masala
1 tbsp roasted peanuts or crushed papad for crunch
Freshly cut coriander leaves for garnish
Method to prepare Simple Khichdi Recipe
Wash and rinse the rice and moong dal together
In a pressure cooker or deep pan add the rice, dal, turmeric, salt and water
vegetables if you want to add
Cook until soft for 25 mins on sim flame after one whistle
Once it is cooked, mash the rice and the moong dal mixture lightly with the back of a spoon for that cozy and mushy texture
Now comes the twist:
In a small pan, heat little ghee for the tadka
Add cumin seeds, then add sliced onions. Sauté until golden and slightly crisp
now Add the tomatoes, chili powder, garam masala and cook till aromatic
Stir in roasted peanuts ( or crushed papad ) for that extra crunch
Pour this sizzling, fragrant tadka over the soft khichdi
Top it with cut coriander leaves and a drizzle of ghee
Serve hot immediately —
listen to the sizzle and inhale the warmth
and let the mix of soft comfort and crisp surprise wake something gentle inside you

Reflection: Finding Joy in the Little Twists in the Simple Khichdi Recipe
It’s funny how even the smallest change —
a handful of peanuts, an extra tempering,
a pause before you eat —
can turn routine into ritual
Khichdi taught me that rest doesn’t mean dullness
It can be soft and flavorful, still and alive
Just like us — tired, but still capable of creating something beautiful
“Even comfort can have texture
Even tired hearts can make something golden.”
Reflection Note: When Food Becomes a Hug in the Simple Khichdi Recipe
Khichdi doesn’t care for that fancy plating or perfect timing
It forgives overcooked rice, it welcomes extra ghee, and it accepts the chaos of your day
It reminds me that nourishment isn’t about doing things perfectly — it’s about allowing softness back into our lives
And maybe, that’s what love looks like —
few spoonsful of warm dal, rice and veggies and masalas
a tired woman exhaling,
and a stove that still believes in her to create something so nourishing and tasty and easy
hope you found this blog beneficial and enticing
until next time, keep smiling
much love … stay happy … stay blessed … always
