Mindful Dishwashing : Washing Dishes Like a Monk – Bhakti in a Busy World – Episode 4

Mindful Dishwashing

Washing Dishes Like a Monk

There is a moment at night when the house goes quiet…

but the sink does not

Steel plates wait

Oily pans glare

Water runs like a tired river

And we think:

Again?

But what if this was never punishment?

What if this was practice?

Why Monks Love Repetition

In many monasteries, monks are given simple tasks:

Sweeping

Washing bowls

Folding cloth

Not because they are unimportant

But because repetition trains the mind to stay

No escape

No drama

Only your hands, breath and water

What Really Sits on Your Plates

Not just food

But:

conversations

disappointments

laughter

rushed breakfasts

silent dinners

arguments that happened between two rotis

When you wash a plate, you wash those hard unspoken moments of your life

A Sink Side Meditation while Mindful Dishwashing

Tonight, try this:

Don’t play music

Don’t replay arguments

Feel the water

Hear the plate getting washed in those foamy water

And think:

“I release what has been lived.”

Let the soap clean memory too

Ask Yourself…

Why do I treat necessary work like an insult?

Who taught me that stillness is wasteful?

What if calm is more productive than speed?

What part of me is waiting to be washed gently?

Personal Disclaimer

Some nights, I slam the plates

Some nights, I complain loudly inside

Some nights, I rush like the sink is chasing me

I am not a monk

I am just practicing to becoming softer, wiser, more aware and be in a mode of release

Conclusion on Mindful Dishwashing

You don’t need silence of forests

You have running water

You don’t need robes

You have an apron

And sometimes…

God waits at the bottom of a greasy pan

until next time, keep smiling

much love .. stay happy … stay blessed … always
