CHUTNEY FROM SPOILED COCONUT

CHUTNEY FROM SPOILED COCONUT

Me being a south indian, coconut is an essential element in all our curry recipes

sometimes it so happens that when we break open the coconut, the appearance is alright but there’s a spoilt smell coming from it

now you definitely can’t use it in gravies as it will give a bad taste

so here’s how you can make a dry chutney out of it.

it tastes simply yummy but before that let’s know a little

about the coconut

Shriphala ( auspicious fruit ) sanskrit for coconut is and has been an intrinsic part of hindu life

it is considered auspicious and the breaking of the fruit before and after any achievement or event is believed to be a symbolic act of asking god to remove any obstacles that might come in our paths and then after we complete our task, a complete surrender of ourselves to him in the form of thanksgiving

there is never an auspicious event without coconut. it is considered an epitome of good fortune

WHY A COCONUT AND NO OTHER FRUIT IS USED

in ancient times, human sacrifices were part of life. adi shankaracharya was against this practice of ‘BALI’ or human sacrifice

the coconut perhaps it resembled a human skull or head replaced the human as offering

during the puja, the 3 eyes took on the symbolic form of trinity of brahma, vishnu and shiva

hence in every puja, we will always find a coconut framed with mango leaves atop a kalash or pot in indian hindu houses

THE HINDU MYTHOLOGICAL STORY OF THE ORIGIN OF COCONUT TREE

King trishanku was a saint who had a strong desire to ascend to heaven bodily meaning to go to heaven when alive

he had once done a good act to sage vishwamitra and the sage decided to fulfill his desire

he performed a yagna to attain this desire and trishanku began to rise upwards towards heaven

when lord indra, king of gods, saw trishanku at the gates of heaven, he was very furious and caught hold of trishanku and threw him down

vishwamitra saw trishanku coming downwards and shouted, ‘ let trishanku stay where he is now’

trishanku was held up still in space

lord indra would not allow him in heaven and sage vishwamitra would not allow him to come down

hence he was suspended between both heaven and earth

in the mythology folklore which explains the origin of the coconut tree

it further explains that in order that trishanku doesn’t fall down to earth, sage vishwamitra held him up with a big pole

it is said that the pole eventually became a coconut tree and trishanku’s Head became it’s fruit

so that was the mythological tale on coconut

now let’s move on to our recipe
