CHOLE/CHICKPEA RICE: A Simple and Nutritious One-Pot Wonder

INTRODUCING CHOLE / CHICKPEA

Since no one is a fan of chole or chickpea in my house and since it has many health properties, i was wondering how to introduce this ingredient into our diet

i will share my version of easy chole rice recipe which is tasty and easy to make

chickpeas or chole is packed with healthy nutrients, is a great source of fibre and promotes overall health benefit

This recipe is nothing new—the combination of chole or chickpeas with rice makes a complete package of proteins and amino acids

What sets it apart is its preparation being easy and has a balance of flavors that makes it perfect for those who don’t typically enjoy chickpeas

it is not a something new recipe and many people might be already knowing and making it at their homes as well

but i will share my version of this tasty and yummy and protein-packed Chickpea Rice recipe that everyone would love it


LET'S TALK ABOUT OUR STAR INGREDIENT CHOLE OR CHICKPEA

Before starting the recipe, let’s talk about why chickpeas or chole must be included in your diet:

chickpeas are high in fibre hence supports our digestive system

it has a great source of protein, vitamins, and essential minerals like iron and magnesium

chickpeas helps to manage the blood sugar levels


Ingredients for CHOLE/CHICKPEA RICE

Here’s are the items you will require:

Chickpeas (chole) – 1 cup (soaked overnight)

CHOLE/CHICKPEA RICE

Rice – 1 cup

CHOLE/CHICKPEA RICE

Onion – 1, medium-sized

CHOLE/CHICKPEA RICE

Tomatoes – 2, medium-sized

CHOLE/CHICKPEA RICE

Garlic – A few pods

Spice powders – Turmeric, red chili powder, coriander powder, cumin powder, chana masala (or garam masala), salt, and a pinch of sugar

Oil – For cooking

Coriander and mint leaves – Chopped, for garnish

PROCEDURE TO MAKE THE CHOLE/CHICKPEA RICE

First step is to Soak 1 cup of chickpeas overnight in water

The next day, cook the chickpeas in a pressure cooker for a whistle and cook for 10 mins on low flame

Cook the rice separately until three-fourths done whichever way, either pressure cook or by straining the rice. This ensures the grains remain firm when mixed with the gravy

Making the Flavorful Base:

grind the onion, tomatoes, and garlic into a smooth paste in a mixer and keep it aside

Heat oil in a pan

add the onion tomato paste and saute until the raw smell disappears and the water in the mixture evaporates

Add spice masala powders like turmeric, red chili powder, coriander powder, and cumin powder. Sauté until the oil separates

Stir in chana masala or garam masala, along with the required salt and a pinch of sugar for balance

the masala for the chana is ready

Combine and Cook:

now Add the cooked chickpeas to this prepared masala and mix everything really well

now add in the rice to the chole mixture and mix everything very lightly taking care that the rice does not break much

Sprinkle chopped coriander and mint leaves over the prepared rice, cover with a lid, and let the dish cook on low heat for 5-7 minutes

Rest and Serve:

Turn off the heat and mix the rice well and then let the dish rest with the lid on for another 10 minutes

Serve this rice with warm with curd, pickle, or crispy papad for a complete, satisfying meal
