Curry Leaves
There was a time when I used to brush them aside — those dark green leaves floating on top of every curry or sambar
“Just for flavor,” I thought, fishing them out before eating. I didn’t know then that I was throwing away not just leaves but lineage
Years later, when I began cooking on my own, I realized how empty a dish felt without them — how that one small handful of curry leaves carried something unspoken, something that connected the food to memory
I remember the first time I sautéed fresh curry leaves in hot coconut oil
The moment they hit the pan, they crackled like monsoon rain on a tin roof, releasing an aroma that filled the whole house
In that instant, I was back in my grandmother’s kitchen — a place fragrant with stories, where food was not just cooked but remembered
She would pluck the leaves straight from the backyard tree, crush a few between her palms, and say, “This is the smell of home.” And it was..
No store-bought ingredient could replace that earthy, grounding scent — the scent of belonging
Curry leaves, humble and often overlooked, are quiet healers
Ayurveda calls them kadi patta, rich in vitality — they aid digestion, strengthen hair, improve eyesight and balance pitta

But beyond all their physical gifts, they carry a deeper message — to honor our roots
Just as these leaves add depth to food only when tempered in heat, our own roots — our values, our stories, our culture — reveal their true fragrance when life tests us
The heat doesn’t destroy them, in fact it awakens them
Now, I never throw curry leaves away. I fry them crisp, make chutneys with them or sometimes even sprinkle their powder on rice
But more than that, I keep them as a reminder — to stay rooted, no matter how far life takes me
Because healing, I’ve come to understand, doesn’t always come from something new
Often, it’s found in remembering where we came from and in letting the scent of those roots guide us home again
