Conversations with lord Krishna – Episode 8:
Episode 8:- “Krishna, How Do I Let Go of the Past?”
Episode 8 of Conversations with Krishna, a deep reflection on how to release the past and live more fully in the present. Krishna shares his wisdom on forgiveness, attachment, and the importance of living without being weighed down by what has already been
Me: lord Krishna, I can’t seem to move forward. I keep holding onto the past — memories, regrets, mistakes. How do I let go and live freely in the present?
lord Krishna (gently): You are not what has happened to you. You are the witness, the observer, beyond time
“The past is gone, the future is uncertain, and the present is all that is real.”
Me: But my past keeps shaping me. How can I just… let go?
lord Krishna: By realizing that attachment to the past keeps you chained to a story that is no longer true
“A person who is not attached to the fruits of their actions is free from all suffering.” (Gita 4.20)
tyaktvā karma-phalāsaṅgaṁ nitya-tṛipto nirāśhrayaḥ
karmaṇyabhipravṛitto ’pi naiva kiñchit karoti saḥ
BG 4.20: he, who, having totally given up attachment to actions and their fruit, no longer depends on anything in the world and is ever content, does nothing at all, though fully engaged in action
meaning…
The ignorant man is always seeking refuge in this or that material object because the gross mind can only exist by clinging to such gross objects however wretched they might be. Without such a prop, he cannot live. That is why man clings to objects in spite of all the suffering that they caused both by possession and non-possession
The wise man, on the other hand, has found his abode of peace in Atma, and never falls down to the plane of the matter though he lives in a physical body. For such a man action is no action
Me: So, holding on to the past is like holding onto suffering?
lord Krishna: Yes. Every moment you cling to the past, you deny the present
The past is gone. The future is not here yet. The only time you truly possess is now
Me: But what about the pain of past mistakes? The things I wish I could undo?
lord Krishna: Forgive yourself, and forgive others. Forgiveness is not for them — it is for you. It frees you from the chains of attachment
“One who has forgiven the offenses of others attains peace.” (Gita 16.3)
tejaḥ kṣamā dhṛtiḥ śaucamadroho nātimānitā
bhavanti sampadaṃ daivīmabhijātasya bhārata
sublimity, forgiveness, fortitude, external purity, bearing enmity to none and absence of self esteem-these are, o arjuna, the marks of him, who is born with the divine endowments
meaning…
A long term vow of never to get angry in the first place is termed kshamaa, which means forgiveness
If we feel someone has hurt us in any way, we want to punish him in the future. But when we forgive someone on the spot, we do not leave room for grudges to accumulate in our mind, cutting the very root of this attitude of punishment
The way to do this is to not expect any joy or sorrow from anyone or anything

Me: How do I forgive when the past still feels so heavy?
lord Krishna: Through understanding. The past is just a set of experiences and you are not those experiences. You are the one who learns from them
“In this world, the soul is never born; it is eternal, undying, and beyond all sorrow.” (Gita 2.20)
When you see yourself as eternal, the past becomes just a lesson, not a burden
na jāyate mriyate vā kadāchin
nāyaṁ bhūtvā bhavitā vā na bhūyaḥ
ajo nityaḥ śhāśhvato ’yaṁ purāṇo
na hanyate hanyamāne śharīre
BG 2.20: The soul is neither born, nor does it ever die; nor having once existed, does it ever cease to be. for, it is unborn, eternal, everlasting and primeval; even though the body is slain, the soul is not
meaning…
Though the body is destroyed, yet the all-pervading Atma never dies
It shows that Atma remains only as a witness to the modifications of the body like birth, youth, and death and of the mind in the form of pain and pleasure
The disturbance of the storm clouds does not affect the sun or the sky through which they pass. Therefore man should not identify himself with the foul perishable body and the ever-functioning mind but should hold on to his identity with the Self
Me: So, the key is to see the past from a higher perspective?
lord Krishna: Exactly. Learn, but do not cling. When you see yourself as the soul, you realize you are not bound by the stories of your body or mind
“You came empty-handed and you will leave empty-handed. Do not become attached to things that are transient.” (Gita 2.14)
mātrā-sparśhās tu kaunteya śhītoṣhṇa-sukha-duḥkha-dāḥ
āgamāpāyino ’nityās tāns-titikṣhasva bhārata
BG 2.14: O son of Kunti, the contact between the senses and the sense objects gives rise to fleeting perceptions of happiness and distress. These are non-permanent, and come and go like the winter and summer seasons. O descendent of Bharat, one must learn to tolerate them without being disturbed
meaning…
Those who do not know that the world is a great illusion consider that the experiences of the senses and the mind are real, and super-impose them on themselves and suffer all through their life
But those who know that these modifications belong to the realm of the body only and that the Self remains untroubled and uncontaminated by them, are free from pleasure and pain, and such men live always in a state of happiness
Me (nodding): I see. It’s not about forgetting the past, but releasing its power over me
lord Krishna: Yes. Let go, not in the sense of erasing it, but in the sense of accepting it. The past can only hold you if you keep holding onto it
Embrace the present, and the past will fade into its rightful place — a lesson, not a weight.
