Conversations with Lord Krishna – Episode 4:
tOPIC – “Krishna, I’m Scared of Failing”
Episode 4 of Conversations with Krishna — a heartfelt dialogue for anyone who’s ever been paralyzed by the fear of failure
In this post, Krishna speaks to that quiet but powerful anxiety many people carry — the fear of not being or doing “enough.”
Me: lord Krishna… I’m scared
What if I try and fail? What if I’m not good enough?
lord Krishna (gently): Good enough… for what?
Me: For success. For respect. For love. I look around and see people doing better and they seem more confident, more capable. What if I’m not meant to win?
lord Krishna: Who taught you that your worth depends on winning?
Me (quietly): Isn’t it obvious?
lord Krishna: Then let me say it clearly:
“One who is self-controlled, content, and not driven by the fruits of action is truly successful.” (Gita 4.20)
The fear of failure comes from measuring your soul with someone else’s ruler
tyaktvā karma-phalāsaṅgaṁ nitya-tṛipto nirāśhrayaḥ
karmaṇyabhipravṛitto ’pi naiva kiñchit karoti saḥ
BG 4.20: he, who, having totally given up attachment to actions and their fruit, no longer depends on anything in the world, and is ever content, does nothing at all, though fully engaged in action
They are not attached to the fruits of work, because they have surrendered everything to the Lord. They are ever content because they experience the bliss of the Self beyond which there is no delight anywhere at all
Their content is not conditioned by time, place, and circumstances and therefore they are ever content ‘nityatriptah’.

The ignorant man is always seeking refuge in this or that material object because the gross mind can only exist by clinging to such gross objects however wretched they might be. Without such a prop, he cannot live. That is why man clings to objects in spite of all the suffering that they caused both by possession and non-possession
The wise man, on the other hand, has found his abode of peace in Atma, and never falls down to the plane of the matter though he lives in a physical body. For such a man action is no action
Lord Krishna exhorts Arjuna to find that state and live in it while carrying out all the duties which he is called upon to perform by his earthly position as a human being.
Me: But still… what if I give everything, and it doesn’t work out?
Krishna: Then you will have truly lived.
True failure is not falling. It is not acting out of fear
“There is no loss or diminution in this path. Even a little progress in dharma protects one from great fear.” (Gita 2.40)
nehābhikrama-nāśho ’sti pratyavāyo na vidyate
svalpam apyasya dharmasya trāyate mahato bhayāt
BG 2.40: in this path ( of selfless action ) there is no loss of effort, nor is there fear of contrary result; even a little practice of this discipline saves one from the terrible fear of birth and death
once we commence on the journey of spiritual practice then even if we do not complete the path in this life, God sees that our intention to do so existed
Therefore, he grants us the human birth again, to enable us to continue from where we had left off. In this way, we avert the great danger
Also, Shree Krishna says that no loss ever comes from endeavor made on this path. This is because whatever material assets we accumulate in the present life have to be left behind at the time of death. But if we make any spiritual advancement on the path of Yog, God preserves it, and gives us the fruits in the next life, enabling us to start off from where we had left
A small spark of fire is capable of spreading and burning up a whole forest; A small ship is capable of taking us over the big ocean. Even so, even a little practice of Karma Yoga protects man from the great ills of life
Even it is a piece of worship, or a small mantra – have faith in it and go on doing it as best as you can. This will enable you to cross the ocean of samsara
A bit of medicine, taken with a proper diet, helps a man to overcome a fearful disease
Generally, the seekers are discouraged by thinking of the obstacles on the path of spiritual life “How can I swim across this mighty inscrutable ocean of samsara? How can I transcend this limitless darkness of ignorance? Alas! I am not a Rishi. I cannot perform painful Tapas. I have no steadiness of mind. How can I be saved ?”
Such is the usual train of thought for the majority of the seekers. Such discouraging thoughts are the real obstruction to progress
So the Lord assures all that whatever little they do will yield the best results and they can work wonders by their faith. This is the Lord’s promise. This is the Lord’s hope for mankind.
Me: But the world is so obsessed with results. People only respect success
lord Krishna: The world praises outcomes. I praise effort born from truth
Act not to prove. Act to express. Offer your action to me — and leave the rest
Me: Even if I fall?
lord Krishna: Especially when you fall
The one who walks with courage despite fear is dear to me
“He who is the same in success and failure, who is content, detached, and steady — he is truly wise.” (Gita 12.17)
yo na hṛiṣhyati na dveṣhṭi na śhochati na kāṅkṣhati
śhubhāśhubha-parityāgī bhaktimān yaḥ sa me priyaḥ
BG 12.17: he who neither rejoices nor hates, nor grieves, nor desires and who renounces both good and evil actions and is full of devotion, is dear to me
“Those devotees who neither become overwhelmed with joy when they beget a dear son or get a good disciple, nor feel hatred towards a wayward son or bad disciple, who do not become absorbed in lamentation at the loss of some desirable object nor desire something pleasing that they do not have, who do not engage in either pious or sinful activities and who are devoted to Me–they are dear to Me.”
Me (after a long pause): Then… I’ll try. Even if I’m scared
Krishna (smiling): That’s all I ask
Your path is not measured in trophies but in truth
